1. Don’t go alone
If you want to go swimming in the open water, make sure you don’t go alone. Take someone with you who swims, sails or sups with you. Or put someone on the side who can keep a close eye on you from there. If something should happen, there is always someone who can quickly come to the rescue.
2. Swim with a buoy
Swim with a special swim buoy. This is a floating buoy, often inflatable, that you attach around your waist and ensure that you are more visible in the water. This buoy then floats behind you while swimming, but you don’t notice it yourself. You can also float on it if you get cramps or are tired. Most versions today are made in such a way that you can safely carry your belongings such as your phone and keys without getting them wet.
3. Never Dive
Diving from bridges and in ports is prohibited in the Netherlands. But even without this ban and in all other places in the open water, it is better never to dive into the open water. After all, you don’t know how deep it is, and what might be beneath the water’s surface.
4. Protect yourself from the cold

No matter how much you might want to swim further or how long you might have been looking forward to this swimming session. As soon as you notice that you are getting cold or not feeling well: leave the water immediately. Tomorrow is a new day and otherwise next week or next month. Safety above all.

Water temperature and quality
It always sounds tempting to finish your workout in a special warmer pool used for swimming lessons or gymnastics. That heat may be nice at first, but after a few laps you get tired of it. Swimming in warm water is not pleasant, but the same goes for cold water. The ideal water temperature for a quick swim would be between 25.5 and 26.5 degrees Celsius.
